A very extensive Wedgwood creamware composed dinner service
19th century and some later replacements, variously impressed in lower and upper case marks
The shaped light-coloured body with branch handles and flower and branch finials, comprising: sixty-three dinner plates, forty-six large soup plates, twelve small soup plates, forty-nine dessert plates, five large two-handled pedestal circular tureens and covers and four stands, circa 26-29cm high, two large soup spoons, six shallow two-handled pedestal circular tureens and three covers, four square tureens and three covers, a small circular two-handled tureen on a fixed stand and cover, two small two-handled circular tureens and stands and three covers, four two-handled circular pedestal dishes, two rectangular pedestal dishes, two rectangular two-handled pedestal dishes, a heavily shaped and moulded pedestal dish, four rectangular two-handled pierced pedestal dishes, two tripod pierced octagonal dishes, nineteen rectangular dishes of various forms and sizes, twenty-one rectangular two-hanlded dishes of various forms and sizes, eight circular dishes of various forms and sizes, a shaped moulded oval dish, a rectangular cake dish and cover, a circular box and cover, a rectangular box, an oval woven basket, an oval woven tray, two various asparagus trays, six various pierced strainers, six basket woven side dishes (damages) (279)
Provenance
This service belonged to and was accumulated by the Helder family which lived in a patrician house in Groningen. They also possessed the mansion "Borg" Vaartwijk in the village of Westerbroek, ten kilometres east of Groningen. They owned the Helder factory in Zwolle.
This service known as the "Vaartwijk" dinner service was inherited by Mr. P. Buwalda, retired ambassador of the Netherlands, who organized gala dinners with it during his long diplomatic career abroad.
Special notice
Christie's charge a buyer's premium of 20.825% of the hammer price for lots with values up to NLG 200,000. If the hammer price exceeds the NLG 200,000 then the premium is calculated at 20.825% of the first NLG 200,000 plus 11.9% of any amount in excess of NLG 200,000.
