Lot Essay

The prototype of this composition is in the Alte Pinakotek, Munich. According to Giorgio Vasari, the original work was painted for Domenico Canigiani, a wealthy Florentine. Later the painting belonged to the Medici family (circa 1589-1634) and was given to Maria Luisa dei Medici on her marriage to Jahann Wilhelm von der Pfalz in Düsseldorf.
