Lot Essay

Domenico Piola defined the practice of celebrating the arts in several examples that depict a woman seated at an easel with symbols of the arts below (see, for example, a frontispiece called 'Allegory of Time and Painting' engraved by Tasniere in Illustrated Bartsch, New York, 1983, vol. 44, p. 57, fig. 2).
In a letter to the present owner dated 4 May 2000, Dr. Mary Newcome suggested an attribution to Domenico Piola.
