Lot Essay

The story of Narcissus comes from Ovid's Metamorphosis (3:339:-510) in which the handsome youth is punished for spurning Echo. She was condemned by the goddess Juno to repeat only the last words Narcissus spoke to her. He, on the other hand, was punished by falling in love with his own reflection, and pined away gazing at himself in a pool. At his death, he was changed into the flower that now bears his name.
