Lot Essay

In the ensuing seven years of war with Britain (1807-1814), during which time the British controlled Danish waters, great efforts were made to compensate for the loss of the fleet and a large number of gunboats were built. In the first three years of the war these boats were on several occasions able to capture cargo ships and defeat British naval brigs, although they were not strong enough to overcome larger frigates and and ships of the line.
