A fine and rare quartet of 10-inch (25.4cm.) diameter terrestrial and celestial globe, and two armillary spheres, the terrestrial GLOBE Classique NOUVELLE ÉDITION Par CH. DIEN MÉDAILLE D'ARGENT Revu en 1849 SAURET-ANDRIVEAU Successeurs Rue des Beaux Arts, 8. made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, the northern printed with an hour dial, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the meridian of Paris graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans with a note off Peru reading N.a Les Signes et Degrés du Zodiaque comme les jours des mois gravés à l'Ecliptique donnent immédiatement et plus exactement la déclinasion du Soleil, qu'en la cherchant l'horizon où ils deviennent alors inutiles , the continents with the coastline outlined delicately in blue and showing rivers, mountains, towns, cities and the Great Wall of China (extensive but very neat restoration, some discolouration) with stamped brass meridian circle;
the celestial Dressé PAR CH. DIEN. PARIS Sauret-Andriveau, Succ. Rue des Beaux Arts, 8., made up of twelve yellow printed gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours and interspersed with dates of the year, a note reading N.a Les mots placés à l'Equateur indiquent le méridien pour 10 heures le sol. , the equinoctial colure graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, the constellations shown by lines connecting the stars of various magnitudes and labelled in French, the stars labelled with Greek characters (some rubbing and discolouration with slight loss of detail, neat restoration) with stamped brass meridian circle;
the Ptolemaic armillary sphere with 2-inch (5.1cm.) diameter terrestrial globe at the centre made up of twelve colour reproduced gores from DELAMARCHE No 12 Rue du Jardinet PARIS , with a gilt-painted sun-disc and printed paper moon disc showing a stylised lunar surface, both on wire arms, within papered wooden polar, tropic and equatorial rings, each with red-painted edges and graduated in degrees and named in French, also with two matching colure rings and a tin hour dial, further with ecliptic band showing days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac with names and sigils, with stamped brass meridian circle;
the Copernican armillary sphere with 1¼-inch (3.2cm.) diameter brass sunball at the centre arranged with three gear wheels to the small brown and green painted earth ball and white-painted moon ball, with wire arms for eight further white-painted planet balls of varying sizes, with stamped brass equinoctial and solstitial colures, labelled as such and the latter graduated 0-30° near the North Pole;
the four spheres with typical Charles Dien steel horizon rings, stamped with days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, on two ebonised quadrant supports to brass fitting and turned ebonised column and stepped plinth base -- 20in. (50.8cm.) high each, average; together with a copy of De l'Usage des Globes et des Sphères, Charles Dien, Nouvelle Édition, E. Bertaux, Libraire-Éditeur, 8°, paper covers, three copper-engraved plates (some wear to edges and spine)
