Trumpet form, engraved with a drawing room scene of a tragic announcement to a family, and a scene of sidewheel paddle steamer on rough seas, with presentation inscription and dated 1850, apparently unmarked
20in. high; 21oz. 10dwt.
The inscription reads: TO CAPT. ROBERT PIERSON, this trumpet is most respectfully presented by the passengers of the steamship Philadelphia on a voyage from N.Y. to Chagres for his fidelity during the fearful gale of July 1850 with the hope that his life may be preserved for future usefulness continuing his trust in God who guides the whirlwind and directs the storm.

Chagres is a town in Panama, and in 1850 was presumably the stop where travellers crossed over land on their way to California.
