A THREE-PIECE SILVER TEA SERVICE WITH ORIGINAL BILL OF SALE
maker's mark of saunders pitman, providence, rhode island, 1803
Comprising: a teapot, a teapot stand, covered sugar bowl, and cream jug, all but stand engraved with monogram AA, sugar bowl, cream jug and teapot stand marked on bases
teapot 12½in. wide overall; gross weight 47oz. 10dwt.
The monogram AA is that of Abigail Arnold. This lot is accompanied by an invoice from Saunders Pitman to James Arnold Esqr, listing the present teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug together with their weights. Arnold's invoice, dated January 4, 1803, also lists purchases of a set of six tumblers, pair of salt cellars, a pair of plated candlesticks and some table silver. The original charge for this tea service (without the teapot stand) was $113.80.
Pitman advertised in the Provence Gazette on April 6, 1798: "For Sale, at the Shop of S. Pitman, a small but elegant Appointment of Raised Work, such a Tea-pots, Sugar-Dishes, Cream Pots, Porringers. The above is made by S. Pitman, which is warranted to be good silver, of superior workmanship, and at Boston prices." (5)
