Lot Essay

Charles Cutler Torrey (1799-1827), immigrated with his parents to Salem, Massachusetts in 1800. In 1815, he travelled to Philadelphia to study art and around 1820, he returned to Salem where he worked as an engraver. In 1823, he left Salem for Nashville, Tennessee and died there in 1827 of the fever. The figurehead of the ship is a staghound, evidence supporting the title of the painting. A certificate from the National Hall of Art certifying the artist and the title of the painting and dated September 25, 1945 accompanies this lot.
