A ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF APOLLO
Circa 2nd Century A.D.
Based on a Greek work of the 5th century B.C., from a herm, the head turned subtly to the right, the oval face with slightly parted lips and large lidded eyes, the brow and bridge of the nose rendered with sharp lines, suggestive of a bronze original, wearing a diadem, with abundant drilled curls at the forehead, longer locks in front of the ears, wavy tresses falling to the shoulders, and a tapering mass of locks in back, with iron pins preserved at the shoulders
