A ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF DIONYSUS
Circa 1st-2nd Century A.D.
The youthful god depicted with soft idealizing features, the lidded eyes with sharp arching brows, the small mouth with the lips pressed together, his center-parted hair held in place by a band which crosses his forehead, adorned with an ivy wreath, the hair pulled back, framing his face and tied up into a large knot at the nape of his neck, with wavy tendrils falling on to his shoulders, a tenon below for insertion into a composite statue
