A ROMAN MARBLE FIGURE OF DIONYSUS
Circa 2nd Century A.D.
The massive muscular figure standing on an oval plinth, wearing high openwork sandals and a goat skin which is tied on his right shoulder and draped diagonally across his torso, a fringed fold along the upper edge, the goat's flattened head resting on the left side, a paw descending along his upper left thigh, with tendrils of hair preserved on the shoulders, a panther seated on the base with its head angled up, the god's left leg joined to a tree trunk support
