With its diamond and chevron inlaid top, applied diamond inlaid scalloped skirt, ring and urn-turned pedestal with beaded edge, and diamond inlaid knees, this candlestand exemplifies the distinct individualistic designs of the Connecticut River valley. A Rhode Island candlestand at Winterthur illustrated in Charles Montgomery, American Furniture: The Federal Period, (New York, 1966), p. 385, fig. 372, is embellished with a top employing fan-inlaid corners and a central eight-pointed star within a square frame, and with segmented icicle inlaid knees; all features which are reminiscent of the decoration exhibited in this candlestand. Another related candlestand with a highly embellished inlaid top and with similar turned pedestal at Winterthur is illustrated in Montgomery, p. 387, fig. 376. A candlestand with rounded top, applied scalloped edge and similar pedestal is also at Winterthur and is illustrated in Montgomery, p. 385, fig. 373. Another with similar turned pedestal sold in these Rooms, October 18, 1996, lot 87, and as one with similar inlay sold Sotheby's New York, October 14, 1989, lot 314.
