Lot Essay

French-born artisans working in America in the late 18th/early 19th centuries were important for the development of the classical style in America. One such cabinetmaker born in France in 1789 was Anthony Quervelle, listed in Philadelphia's City directories from 1820 until his death in 1856. Characteristics of his work and seen here are the powerful upswept leaf-carved knees, gadrooned returns, and acanthus-carved and gadrooned pedestal.
