Lot Essay

A scene above Codford looking south across the Wylie Valley in Wiltshire. The artist's daughter identifies herself and her mother Edie with the dog Gypsy sitting in the shade with Anne, Edie's daughter by her first marriage. Jenny Nicholson, the artist's granddaughter is on top of the haystack, while Edie's son by her first marriage, John, in a white sailor suit and hat is left, in the shadow of the same haystack as the artist. The summer of 1932 at Sutton Veny was the last summer that the artist and his family spent together.
