Lot Essay

The present work was painted in Paris in 1927 from Tony Gandarilla's new flat on the seventh floor of a massive block in Passy. Wood had hoped to be given a suite of rooms in the apartment but found himself with a single small room. The views however were inspirational. The artist wrote to his mother in February, 'Life in this enchanting house which is so full of sun from 8 in the morning until 6 in the evening is a paradise and I don't see any more use in going to the South of France in the winter for if one sits here behind our huge windows one is too hot even sitting still' (see R. Ingleby, Christopher Wood An English Painter, London, 1995, p. 150).
