Lot Essay

'Each of the big 4 railways contributed towards the development of the advertising poster as an art form by commissioning posters from the leading artists of the day, but LNER probably did more than the others being responsible for many posters which conveyed a strong advertising message in addition to standing up well artistically'. (G. Hughes, LNER, Shepperton, 1986. p. 136.). Lee-Hankey was commissioned to paint a series of four paintings, Holy Loch from Dunoon, Whitby (lot 142), Wroxham, Norfolk, and The Flower Market, Norwich, the present work.
