Heron's garden paintings of the mid-1980s offer complex visual and associative pleasures. In discussing the present work and White Garden Painting May 25 - June 12 1985, Mel Gooding comments, 'their cool modulations of pinks and pale violets, and greens and bright lemons evoke the fresh morning light of spring and summer respectively. In both we find again that combination of forms and signs - splodge and dot, line and stripe, cross and diamond, tentacle and disc: that marvellous inconsistency of language that gives this series of paintings its extraordinary originality' (op. cit., p. 239).
