Nicholson produced a number of painted boxes. For him they represented the blurring of the difference between an object and a work of art
(see J. Lewison, Ben Nicholson, Tate Gallery exhibition catalogue, London, 1993, p. 215).

E.Q. Nicholson (1908-1992) married Ben's younger brother, Kit in 1931. She had learnt batik printing in Paris and became a fabric designer for the Edinburgh Weavers from 1945. In 1951 Cole and Sons began production of her wallpaper designs. From 1950 she concentrated on painting but she resumed her fabric printing during the 1980s.
