The rectangular top with hinged lid enclosing the keyboard with a frieze painted with foliate scrolls within a checkered border and centered by the maker's oval enamel plaque inscribed 'NEW [PA] TENT/ON ADDITIONAL KEYS/BY LONGMAN & BRODERIP/MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKERS/NO 26 CHEAPSIDE & NO 15 HAYMARKET/LONDON' flanked by pierced panels carved with a harp and scrolls, inlaid overall with striated crossbanding, the stand with square tapering legs, case stamped '149' and '302', one leg replaced, stand previously with stretchers

Longman and Broderip were musical publishers, instrument makers and retailers who were listed under this name from 1776 until the firm went bankrupt in 1798. The firm was established by James Longman in or before 1767. Frances Broderip entered the partnership in 1775 (Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments, 1984, vol.II, p.537).
