The present drawing was executed shortly before the sitter's departure for France at the age of nineteen. Geoffrey Murray-Smith was tragically killed in action only months later on September 28, 1915 at Vermelles, France, a small town in Pas de Calais near the Belgium border. He was serving as a second lieutenant with the fifth battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.
