The sitter was the younger daughter of Sir Coutts Lindsay, founder of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877. Her mother was Blanche FitzRoy, daughter of the First Commissioner of Works, a talented amateur artist who exhibited at the Grosvenor and later, after her separation from Sir Coutts Lindsay, at the New Gallery. Helen remained devoted to her mother until her death in 1912. She then journeyed to China as a missionary and eventually married George Ramsey, a Scot twenty years her junior. They lived at Thorpe St Andrew, near Norwich, where she died in 1955 aged eighty-seven. Her portrait was also painted by Charles Edward Perugini (1839-1918).
