We are grateful to Patricia Reed for providing the catalogue entries for lots 18 and 19.

The artist's daughter, Nancy Nicholson (1899-1977) married the poet Robert Graves in 1918. The present work was probably executed at Chaucer's House, Woodstock, in the summer of 1902. Another drawing of Nancy at the same age, and in the same hat, dated 1902, was exhibited as Costume Study, no. 93, at Obach & Co., The Society of Twelve in 1908.
