Lot Essay

Flint (op. cit., p. 28) commented on his use of antique paper, 'Many drawings of mine have been made on beautiful antique paper, old French, old Italian, old Dutch, Hungarian, Spanish, English and Irish. Colour, texture, 'feel' are subtler, more attractive, more simpatica, than in modern papers. They are on pages from ancient account and sketch books, old albums, some of immense size and in elaborately tooled bindings, and on odd sheets collected here and there or given to me by friends'.
