William Prinsep came from a family of well known Anglo-Indian, several of whom took drawing lessons from George Chinnery-as did William himself, a successful banker merchant. On his retirement in 1842, William Prinsep sailed from Calcutta to England by the 'overland' route, taking the detour via Koseir and Luxor, which as favoured by the adventurous traveller.
