The view is taken from just below the garden of the George Inn, Birdlip, Gloucester.
Born at Eltham in Kent, Whistler studied at the Slade School of Art until 1926 and then in Rome. One of his first commissions was for the murals in the refreshment room at the Tate Gallery (1926-27) and one of his most famous and accomplished works was the mural in the long dining-room at Plas Newydd, Anglesey, commissioned in 1936. He illustrated a number of books including Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, 1930, Hans Anderson's Fairy Tales and Legends, 1935 and an edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, 1936. He also worked on scenery and costume designs for several West End plays and ballets including An Ideal Husband, Westminster Theatre, 1943, The Rake's Progress, Sadler's Wells Ballet, 1935 and Shakespeare's The Tempest, Stratford-upon-Avon, 1934. He died in 1944 whilst fighting in Normandy, as a troop commander in the Guards Armoured Division, on his first morning in action.
