Lot Essay

Lear arrived in Palestine in the Spring of 1858. From Jerusalem he journeyed to Petra, Masada and the Dead Sea. He returned to Jerusalem and then onto Lebanon, arriving back in London by late summer 1858. He wrote to his sister Ann on 14 May 1858, 'I was only looking about me yesterday, but today I shall make a drawing of Mt Lebanon and the Bay and town, which are really lovely as a whole'.
