Lot Essay

Between the wars St Malo was the favourite resort for Flint and his family during school holidays. The town provided a wealth of subjects for the artist, in particular a 'series of delightful beaches which the immense tides of that part of the Breton coast hid or revealed with endless variations of aspect. The kaleidoscopic effects of the crowded sands kept me busy. I had my own niche on top of a rocky eminence in the Bon Secours bay. There were subjects at every point of the compass' (see Sir William Russell Flint, R.A., catalogue for the Royal Academy Diploma Gallery exhibition, London, 1962, p. 4).
