August van Geert (editor, d.1938)
Iconographie der Indischen Azaleen Die abbildung und beschreibung der besten alten und neuen varietäten enthaltend. Ghent: C. Annoot-Braeckman for Adolf Hoste and August van Geert, [1881-]1882. Large 4° (294 x 225mm). Half-title. 36 chromolithographic plates by and after P.Stroobant. (Small tears to blank lower margin of plates XIII-XVI, browning to plates XXXI-XXXIII, XXXV, neat manuscript correction to title of plate IX.) Contemporary green cloth-backed boards, original paper wrappers bound in.
A Rare work on Azaleas that was apparently published simultaneously in German, French and English. All editions are scarce and there are no records of any copies having sold at auction since 1975. The present edition appears to be the rarest of all. Stafleu and Cowan record that both the English and French editions were published in 12 parts between October 1881 and September 1882. They were unable to find a copy of the present German edition, but the title date, the first-part sub-title (pp.[9-10]) and make up of the work show that it was also originally issued in the same form. The work consists of 36 plates of the best available varieties of Azaleas, each faced by a leaf of explanatory text by contemporary experts (V. Cuvelier, Fr. Desbois, Jos. Vervaene jr., Paul de Schryver and van Geert himself). From the French edition it would appear that the original intention had been to continue the work on a monthly basis however only the present volume (composed from 12 monthly parts) ever appeared. The artist/chromolithographer was an important figure amongst european botanical artists of the period and had worked (initially for his father) on a number of important illustrated botanical works, probably starting with A.Verschaffelt's Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias (Ghent: 1848-1860). Cf. BM(NH) II, p.648 (English edition); cf. Harvard/Arnold p.273 (French edition); Nissen BBI 697 (French and English editions); Stafleu & Cowan VI, 15.905.
