An extremely fine and rare early 17th-Century book-form Nuremburg ivory dyptich sundial,
signed PAVLVS REINMAN NORIMBERGÆ FACIEBAT and dated 1604
FACE Ia, upper leaf, outer face: the thirty-two point wind rose in red and black with sixteen initialled points of the compass in German, surrounded by a scale 1-32, with brass index and viewing hole for compass beneath, the surround with black engraved foliate decoration and two birds, four gilt spandrels with bun feet, and two gilt clasps.
FACE Ib, upper leaf, inner face: the signature in red at the top, above two vertical pin gnomon dials, the one on the left for hours 8-16, with figures for the houses of the Zodiac, the one on the right for hours 1-12 in black, above, respectively, a finely engraved representation of an angel appearing to a wise man at prayer, with the dove of peace above, and the nativity scene in a stable with an angel an two others onlooking, the whole surrounded by an hour scale (VI)-XII, I-(VI) in red German gothic script, with one hole for string gnomon
FACE IIa, lower leaf, inner face: the compass bowl engraved SE (with arrow), OR, ME, OC, with blued-iron needle with brass cap and glazed cover, with black engraved foliate engraving and two birds, and two pin gnomon dials, the left four hours in black 9-22, the right for hours in red 2-15, the surround with hour scale 4-12, 1-8 and the crown stamp for Reinman, one side of the leaf with folding brass arm to support the upper leaf, the other with brass suspension loop
FACE IIb, lower leaf, outer face: the central gilt-brass volvelle with embossed moon-face and hours -12 (x2), with index to read off an hour scale in black 1-12 (x2), a day scale 1-29 in red and the epact tables labelled M and S, the surround with black engraved foliate decoration and two birds and four gilt spandrels with bun feet -- 4in. (9.1cm.) wide
