An early 19th-Century lacquered-brass surveying level,
signed on one of the silvered cross-bars of the compass Schmalcalder PATENT 82 Strand LONDON, the telescope with draw-tube focusing, bubble level and lens cap, hinged over the glazed compass with silvered cross with signature and each tip with an initial for the points of the compass, a silver surround graduated 0-360°, with edge bar needle with jewelled cap, the whole rotated by a knurled screw on the underside, with staff mounting for use in the horizontal or vertical positions -- 4¾in. (12cm.) high
