A good late 18th-Century lacquered-brass compound monocular microscope,
signed on the eared stage ADAMS, London, the body-tube located on an arm screwed to the square-section pillar with sunk rack and pinion adjusting the stage for focusing, with adjustable plano-mirror (silvering defective), the pillar with finely modelled scroll support on folding tripod stand, with accessories including a numbered set of five objectives, three lieberkuhn, bull's-eye condensor attachment, frog plate, brass specimen slider and other items, contained in the original fitted mahogany case, with two brass hooks and eyes (replacements) -- 11 5/8in. (29.5cm.) wide

Lot Essay

Despite the curious signature on this microscope, it is entirely consistent with the workshop of George Adams; the engraver's not completing the cross bar of the A indicates that even the best of workmen was not infallible.
