David Roberts was in Antwerp in October 1845 and wrote to his daughter"... I am making a careful study of the tower of the Cathedral with the grotesque old houses around it, and as I have the advantage of a window commanding a view of it. I am doing this in oil" (The Life of David Roberts, R.A. by James Ballantine, Edinburgh, 1866)
