He served in the army during World War II and on his return settled in London and began working as a humorous illustrator and caricaturist for books and magazines, including Punch and Lilliput. The predominant mood of his humour is offset by sinister or macabre overtones. He has developed a fanciful and striking individual graphic manner and since the 1950s has been a household name in Britain.
