The nickel-finished jewelled movement with detent escapement, bimetallic compensation balance, blued screws, presentation inscription to the gold cuvette, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, blued steel moon-style hands, subsidiary seconds, the circular engine-turned case with ribbed band, case signed and numbered, cuvette numbered, dial signed, movement signed and numbered

President James Buchanan presented this fine chronometer to Captain Robinson Wartel of the British Navy. The engraved inscription on the cuvette reads, 'The President of the United States to Captain Robinson Wartel of the British Ship "Retriever" for humanity to Shipwrecked American Seamen, 1859'.
