The oval plate in a scroll and strapwork carved surround, having at the bottom centre the winged lion of St. Mark, surmounted by a pair of young blackamoors holding up the Doge's parasol and cap, flanked by two further blackamoor children, one holding a helmet, and a third reclining on the apron holding St. Mark's Gospel

This exuberant mirror alludes to the past glories of the 'Serenissima', or the Venetian Republic, the European gateway to the East. The patron Saint of the of the city, St. Mark, is represented by the winged lion and the book held by on of the blackamoors; the Doge by his phrygian cap and parasols, and the elaborate patterned drapery alludes to Venice's pivotal role in the East-West and the trade of luxury goods
