Lot Essay

The figure is included in a portrait of Mrs Charles Cooke by Charles Bartlett (1860-1940) dated 1927, now in the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Figures of ladies riding in elaborate court dress of this type are rare, but a similarly attired equestrienne is in the collection of the Chang Foundation and illustrated in Selected Chinese Ceramics from Han to Qing Dynasties, Taipei, 1990, p. 66, no. 14. The slender figure of this lady and her tightly fitted gown suggest that she predates the ladies of more ample proportions who became fashionable in the mid-8th century.
