Lot Essay

John Ayers illustrates a similar bowl in the Baur Collection Catalogue, vol. III, no. A 474, where he notes that 'the occurence of the K'ang hsi reign mark on finely-made bowls and dishes having this rich purple glaze points to the liklihood of their having been made for Court use'. This example is also illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 13, col. pl. 34. A second example was included in the exhibition jointly presented by the Urban Council and Min Chu Society, 'Spleandour of the Qing Dynasty', Catalogue, no. 222, while a third from the Goldschmidt Collection was sold in Hong Kong, 13 November 1990, lot 63.
