Lot Essay

Compare the closely-related 'dragon' jar from the Jingguantang Collection, sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 3 November 1996, lot 507 and the example from the City Art Gallery, Bristol, included in the Exhibition of Chinese Art, Venice, 1954, Catalogue, no. 915. A bowl with red dragons carved through to an opaque white ground is illustrated in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, vol. 10, pl. 146, col. pl. 273. A yuhuchunping in ibid., p. 143, col. pl. 268 is also related in its treatment.
