Lot Essay

The calligraphy in the colophon mounted above the portrait states that Cui Hui was a girl who came from the Pu region. It further states that she fell in love with Cui Jinzhong, who was an official in the same area, and that they enjoyed each other's company for several months. When Cui Jinzhong had to return home, he could not stop thinking about her, so he asked a friend to look for a good painter in Pu in order to paint Cui Hui's portrait.
The colophon ends with a poem by an anonymous Tang poet, reflecting Cui Hui's feelings for her lover.
