an unusual verte-imari punchbowl
early 18th century
With deep rounded sides, the powder-blue exterior gilt with palmette panels of scrolling lotus and lotus designs in the spandrels below an iron-red cell band around the rim, the interior painted, enamelled and gilt in the Japanese Imari style with ribboned vases of chrysanthemum bouquets around a similar spray in the medallion

Lot Essay

Compare the large powder-blue and gilt dish with almost identical design to that on the exterior of this bowl, illustrated in colour by R. Krahl and J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, vol. III, 1986, no.3212, pp.926 and 1259; and the two powder-blue and gilt bowls in the same museum of similar size to the present lot, with central medallion and border rims decorated in the verte-Imari palette, ibid., no.3243, colour plate, pp.927, and 1267.
