Lot Essay

The arms are those of the French Royal family. It is most likely that this service was ordered for King Louis XV in circa 1720 by his great uncle, the Regent Philippe d'Orleans. This important service must have been extensive judging by the diverse pieces which have appeared on the market over the years. It is possible that there were two services ordered between circa 1720 - 30, as reflected in stylistic differences. Another bidet bearing these arms was sold in our New York Rooms, 21 and 22 January 1998, lot 206. A triple spice-box sold in our Monaco Rooms, 22 June 1989, lot 77.
