Lot Essay

It is likely that this design was adapted to the nationality of the purchaser, since ships with Swedish, Danish, Dutch and French flags are recorded, and others may well have been ordered. Another plate of this design, with Swedish flag, is illustrated by J. Wirgin, Fran Kina till Europa, 1998, p.187, no.202. A example with the Danish flag is in the East India Museum, Gothenburg, and is illustrated by J. A. Lloyd Hyde, Oriental Lowestoft, 1964, pl.XVII, no.66. See F. & N. Hervouët and Y. Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, 1986, no.2.13 for a similar plate for the Dutch market, which has spearhead borders, and which was from the author's collection, sold Sotheby's Monaco, 22 June 1987, lot 1552. Another with Dutch flag, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, from the Helena Woolworth McCann Collection, illustrated by J. G. Phillips, China Trade Porcelain, 1960, pl.62. A plate showing a French flag was sold in Sotheby's London, 27 October 1970, lot 37.
