Lot Essay

Compare the very similar Japanese version of this group in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, illustrated by W. Sargent, The Copeland Collection, 1991, pp.260-1, no.133. However, the body of the body of the porcelain, the modelling, and the gilding on the present example, strongly suggest that this particular example was made in China. Another similar group from the Collection of the Hon. Mrs. Basil Ionides was sold Sotheby's London, 29 May 1990, lot 99.
