Details
CASTAGNO, Giovanni Paolo (fl. second half 16th century). Reggimento contra peste, per conservare i sani, & curare gli infermi. Ferrara: Francesco di Rossi Valentiano, 1572.

4° (201 x 150mm). 4ll., woodcut initials and ornaments, full-page woodcut of St. Roche on final verso. Roman and italic type. (Small marginal repair on title.) Uncut. [Bound with:] Manuscript concerning the plague, 2ll., written in a cursive hand in brown ink, [?Ferrara: late 16th-early 17th century]. Early 20th-century brown roan-backed marbled boards. Provenance: C.W. Dyson Perrins (bookplate and label, sale Sotheby's 17 June 1946, lot 71).

A VERY RARE book on the prevention and cure of the plague. Castagno begins by outlining how to avoid the disease, through diet, exercise, hygiene and fumigation, and then suggests various herbal and other remedies. The manuscript which is bound with it gives additional advice on the application of 'compositi' and ointments and seems to advocate in particular vomitting and other purgative methods. EDIT 1874; Durling and Wellcome list later editions only, by Pietro, not Giovanni Paolo, Castagno.
