FIRST EDITION of Savonarola's response to his excommunication, which was promulgated on 18 June 1497. In his defense he cites authorities such as St. Antoninus and Jean Gerson in arguing that disobedience to the Pope may be justified in some circumstances. This Latin-Italian edition is given precedence by bibliographies, but Ridolfi (Life of Savonarola, p.201) believes an Italian edition was issued first.
