Collation: a-h8 (a1r title 'Regulae Sulpitii', a1v verses by Pomponius Laetus and Martinus Phileticus, a2r De octo partibus orationis, woodcut, a4v De moribus puerorum carmen juvenile, a3r De arte grammatica, h6r De scansione, h8v blank). 40 lines. Type: 78R. Woodcut of a schoolmaster and his pupils (91 x 121mm), woodcut ornamental initials, 4-line initial spaces. (A few minor repaired tears, ink of title inscription burning through slightly.) 20th-century tan calf gilt, gilt edges. Provenance: early inscription washed from final verso, light marginal annotations -- Hercule Silva (armorial stamp on title).
RARE, no copies in the British Isles, and only two copies in America. Reichling and Goff assigned this edition to Joannes Tacuinus at Venice c.1495, but IGI has more recently dated it it after 1500. The woodcut of a schoolmaster and his pupils previously appeared in Perottus, Rudimenta grammatices (29 March 1492; Goff P-326). R 1077; Essling I,ii, 696; Sander 7114; IGI V, p.123; Goff S-843.
