According to legend, the holy house where the Virgin Mary was born and raised and where she received the Annunciation, was transported by angels from Nazareth to Loreto, after having been rescued from the infidels at Tersatto in Dalmatia, its first resting place. The house at Loreto was highly influential on Renaissance art (vide Caravaggio's 'Madonna di Loreto', c.1604-05) and artists such as Luca Signorelli, Lorenzo Lotto and Antonio Calcagni contributed to the decoration of the shrine. Torsellino's work gives a history of the holy house, describes its translation to Loreto, the miracles associated with it, and specific gifts made by worshippers. This volume was previously owned by the noted bibliophile and amateur, Louis Treslon-Cauchon, 'superintendant des plaisirs du roi'. Not in BL.
