Small 4°, woodcut ornamental initials and headpiece, with the first blank (erased inscription causing stain on title, a few small stains, smear mark on a2), 18th-century calf, gilt border (rebacked, old lettering-piece relaid, covers and extremities scuffed and rubbed); occasional underlining in ink.
FIRST ISSUE of this edition. Bacon's Essaies first appeared in 1597. Both the 1597 and 1598 issues contained only ten essays, the edition of 1612 had thirty-eight, and the present edition, the last in the author's lifetime, fifty-eight. It marks the first use of the word "essay" on the title page of an English book, no doubt drawn from the first two books of Montaigne's Essais published in 1580. Gibson 13; STC 1147.
