OROSIUS, Paulus (fl. 400 A.D.). The Anglo-Saxon Version from ... Orosius by Aelfred the Great. Together with an English Translation from the Anglo-Saxon [by Daines Barrington (1727-1800)]. London: W. Bowyer and J. Nichols for S. Baker, G. Leigh, T. Payne and B. White, 1773.

8°, half-title, text in Anglo-Saxon and English, folding engraved map at end (title and preliminaries browned at margins, unaesthetic inscription, dated 1939, on front free endpaper), contemporary tree calf, covers with double gilt fillet border and later armorial, flat gilt spine (spine chipped and rather faded, upper joints cracked, corners bumped).

FIRST EDITION, not notable for the accuracy of its scholarship but for the informed interest being taken in Anglo-Saxon. Although he did "occasionally" consult the original manuscript in the Cotton Library, Barrington relied on a transcript of King Alfred's version by William Elstob (1673-1715). Elstob had printed a specimen of his transcript at Oxford in 1699 but, as the preface notes, he failed to publish it and on his death it passed to Joseph Ames.
